William B. Sterne saved J. Wendell Gourlay from burning, Carp, Ontario, November 16, 1970. At night the two-door sedan containing Gourlay, 30, farmer, was involved in an accident with another automobile, both vehicles being badly damaged and both drivers being knocked unconscious. When Sterne, 36, Canadian Armed Forces major, arrived at the scene, the two wrecked vehicles were afire. Running to the sedan, on which flames burned at the front across its entire width, Sterne opened the door on the passenger side. He climbed into the burning vehicle and kicked the opposite door, but it was jammed. Flames licking into the sedan were within a foot of Sterne as he took hold of Gourlay and with some difficulty pulled him to the open door while backing out of the vehicle. After removing Gourlay from the sedan, Sterne ran to the other automobile; but by then it was totally enveloped in flames. Gourlay recovered from injuries he had sustained.
