William C. Bryant died attempting to save Steven C. Bryant from burning, St. Bethlehem, Tennessee, June 10, 1990. Steven, 11, and his father, Bryant, 48, musician, were asleep in a bedroom of a one-story house when, late at night, fire broke out in the vicinity of the back door. Bryant and two other occupants of the house fled, then realized that Steven was not with them. Despite spreading flames and dense smoke, Bryant re-entered the house for Steven and was last seen calling and searching for him. Arriving firefighters found Bryant’s body inside the house; he had died of smoke inhalation. Steven, who had escaped the house, required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation, and he recovered.
