William C. Yike, Jr., died attempting to save Dennis Gorecki from suffocation, Detroit, Michigan, June 25, 1992. Gorecki, 24, was in a manhole on the property of the company where he was employed when he was overcome in an atmosphere later found to be non-respirable. He collapsed into the accumulated effluent. Yike, 27, laborer of another company working on the premises, was nearby. He announced his intention to rescue Gorecki and immediately entered the manhole. At the bottom, he was seen lifting Gorecki before he himself collapsed. Gorecki was pulled from the manhole by others and was hospitalized. Yike was later removed, but he could not be revived.
