William Collins, Jr., rescued Isobel M. Monahan from burning, San Diego, California, May 2, 1986. Mrs. Monahan, 46, was unable to escape her three-story condominium when fire broke out. Working nearby, Collins, 35, newspaper delivery driver, saw smoke and drove to the scene, where he saw that the condominium was on fire. Hearing Mrs. Monahan call for help, Collins broke a sliding glass door and crawled into the living room. Despite intense heat and dense smoke inside, Collins located Mrs. Monahan and extinguished flames in her hair. He then dragged her several feet to the condominium’s front door, which was double locked. After unlocking the door, Collins dragged Mrs. Monahan outside. Mrs. Monahan was hospitalized for extensive burns. Collins was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, and he recovered.
