William D. Shoemaker helped to save Steven K. Buckner from drowning, Elkland, Missouri, July 2, 1985. Steven, 12, was in a farm pond when he panicked in deep water 50 feet from the bank and hollered f or help. His friend, William, 12, student, who was in the pond nearby, swam to him. A struggle ensued in which William was submerged several times. William struck Steven to subdue him, then began to swim toward the bank, Steven in tow. Two adults who had been alerted arrived at the pond several minutes later and took a rowboat out to the boys. They pulled the exhausted boys aboard and took them the rest of the way to the bank. 60539-7033
