William F. Carroll, 15, clerk, died attempting to save Francis R. Cullen, 12, schoolboy, from drowning, Brooklyn, New York, September 21, 1919. Francis was wading in the Gravesend Ship Canal and stepped into water seven feet deep. He could not swim. William waded from the bank and swam 10 feet to him. Francis took hold of William, and they went under the surface together. Francis returned to the surface and was rescued by a man, but William was drowned. 19961-1573
