William H. Bass died saving Howard Carleton from suffocation, Chapman, Alabama, July 21, 1914. Carleton, 23, laborer, was overcome by carbon dioxide while working in a well 40 feet deep, and Bass, 32, farmer, immediately had himself lowered into the well on a rope. He removed the rope from his body and fastened it around Carleton, then he called to a man at the top to hoist Carleton. The man and a woman who soon joined him hoisted Carleton. The rope was lowered to Bass. He was hoisted a few inches, and then he slipped from the rope. He was taken out about an hour later by means of a hook, but he could not be revived.
