William H. Carey attempted to save Nicholas McNaulty and Patrick H. McHugh from drowning, Lowell, Massachusetts, January 22, 1911. Nicholas, 10, and Patrick, 14, broke through the ice on the Concord River at a point 15 feet from the bank, where the water was nine feet deep. Carey, 19, electrician’s helper, at the opposite side of the river, heard their cries. He ran over 120 feet on weak ice to the hole. Three feet from the hole he broke through the ice. He grasped Nicholas and tried to support him by holding to the ice, but the ice broke. Patrick had drowned. Men ran to the scene with a rope and tried to pull Carey and Nicholas out. The rope broke, and as Carey and Nicholas fell back into the water, Nicholas slipped from Carey’s hands, which were numb, and was drowned. Carey was dragged from the hole holding another rope between his teeth. He had been in the water about 15 minutes. 9028-1099
