William H. Closson, 29, farmhand, saved George Case, 16, farmhand, from drowning, Flemington, New Jersey, August 6, 1918. While swimming in the South Branch of the Raritan River, where the water was eight feet deep, George began to thresh violently when his strength gave out, and he called for help. Closson swam 20 feet to hiim and cautiously grasped him at his back, but George threw his arms around Closson’s neck and clung tightly. Closson was forced slightly under the surface, and he swallowed some water. He could not break George’s hold, and with George hanging from his neck, he swam 35 feet to wadable water. 19141-1639
