William H. Payne, 34, express messenger, saved an unidentified woman from being killed by a train, Cowan, Tennessee, August 5, 1922. The woman walked toward a railroad track to cross it, not aware of a train approaching on it at a speed of 35 m.p.h. After Payne, who was on the opposite side of the track, had shouted twice to her without attracting her attention, he ran 20 feet to her, crossing the track ahead of the train, which was 25 feet from him and was moving at a speed of 12 m.p.h. He reached the woman as she was stepping onto the track, grasped her with both hands, and lifted and pushed her five feet away from the track as the locomotive passed them. 22804-1871
