William H. Radtke, who attempted to save Robert H. Deal from drowning, Moose, Wyoming, June 19, 1971. On a snow-covered mountain, Deal, 28, fell into a cavern where his lower body was wedged between rocks projecting above draining water that dropped from the cavern opening 20 feet above the bottom. Using an anchored rope, Radtke, 36, nuclear engineer, descended in the falling water to the bottom of the cavern. Deal was lying face down in flowing water beyond the waterfall. He was inert. Radtke made his way to Deal, determined that he was dead, and then climbed out of the cavern. Deal’s body was removed by a rescue team.
