William H. Wallace, 17, schoolboy, saved Herman F. Schomber, 15, schoolboy, from drowning, Woodbury Heights, New Jersey, January 28, 1929. While skating on honeycombed ice on Glen Terrace Lake, Herman broke through into water 15 feet deep 40 feet from the bank. William skated and then crawled 15 feet on unsafe ice to him. As Herman took hold of William’s hand, the ice broke under William, and both were momentarily submerged. Herman became panic-stricken and grasped William around the neck from behind, and they were submerged. Herman released William, and William took hold of him and drew him to the surface. Herman then held to a life preserver that was thrown to him. After having been in the water for 10 minutes, both were rescued by means of ladders, which were pushed to them from the bank.
