William H. Winton, 15, schoolboy, saved Donald F. Silcox, 11, from drowning, Barton, Oregon, July 1, 1952. While wading in the Clackamas River near the mouth of a creek, Donald, who could not swim, lost his footing and drifted into deep water, submerging briefly. William waded 30 feet from the bank and swam 60 feet cross current to Donald who lunged at him and seized him tightly around the neck. Forcibly freeing himself, William calmed Donald and obtained a hold around his chest. He towed Donald 50 feet to wadable water 25 feet from the bank. A man who reached them carried Donald from the water as William continued to the bank. Both boys recovered. 42997-3943
