William J. Burns saved John T. MacCoun from being killed by a train, Wequetonsing, Michigan, September 8, 1924. MacCoun, 89, stepped onto a track on which a train was approaching at a speed of 15 m.p.h. Burns, 40, baggageman, ran 40 feet to the track, threw his arms around MacCoun, and tried to lift him from the track, but MacCoun resisted. He then forced MacCoun backward outside the rail. MacCoun fell, and Burns, who kept hold of him in an effort to support him, was struck by the locomotive and knocked down alongside the track. Burns was seriously injured, and one of his arms was permanently crippled. MacCoun was uninjured. 24721-2137
