William J. Ferris died attempting to save E. Iola McCrary from drowning, Bristol, Texas, April 13, 1924. Iola, 16, was thrown from a cable carrier when the cable broke, and she fell into the Trinity River, where the water was 15 feet deep. Ferris, 58, plumber, who was on the bank, ran 300 feet to a point opposite Iola, swam 50 feet to her, and put his arm around her. She put her arm around his neck, and they both sank and were drowned. 24195-1993
