William J. McIntosh, Sr., saved Cleone E., John F., and Shirley A. Cunningham from drowning, Galveston, Texas, August 28, 1932. While Cleone, 9, was swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, she got into distress at a point 60 feet from South jetty. Shirley, 12, swam from the jetty to Cleone, and Cleone grabbed her. As they struggled, their father swam from the jetty to them, and Shirley grabbed him around the neck. John, 11, who was on a reef 50 feet from them, swam to them and was grabbed. Shirley became separated from the others and was slightly below the surface. McIntosh, 45, merchant, removed his trousers, dived from the jetty, and swam 60 feet to Cleone and John, who were still holding to their father. McIntosh grasped Cleone and John and with his feet pushed their father from them. Holding Cleone with her arm pressed between his left forearm and his body, he pulled Shirley to the surface with his left hand, held John with his right hand, and then with great effort swam on his back 150 feet at an angle to the jetty. Shirley was semiconscious and was revived. The children’s father swam to the jetty.
