William J. Norton, 17, student, saved Glenn B. Reese, 15, student, from electric shock, Austin, Texas, March 24, 1916. Glenn, who was climbing a structural steel tower in the darkness, touched a 5,000-volt wire and fell to a cross piece of the tower 82 feet above the ground. His body lodged on the cross piece and was kept from falling only by the fact that his foot was caught under one of the iron steps that were attached to an upright of the tower. At a point 66 feet above the ground, steps were missing for a distance of 4.5 feet, and at the same point a wire carrying 5,000 volts was attached to an insulator on the upright. William ascended the steps, climbing around the 5,000-volt wire and trying to avoid other wires that reached the tower. He seized Glenn, who was dazed and severely burned, and descended the steps with Glenn held between himself and the upright. He had only the upright to cling to at the point where there were no steps and where the high-power wire had to be passed. The only wires William touched in the act happened to be wires of low voltage. 16296-1349
