William J. Snyder, 17, student, saved Mildred M. Phillips, 18, and Myra L. Emerson and Ella I. Caldin, both 12, from drowning, Tidioute, Pennsylvania, August 7, 1919. Miss Phillips, Myra, Ella, and two other small girls were in a boat in the Allegheny River when the boat suddenly sank, and the girls struggled in the water, which was nine feet deep. Myra grasped Miss Phillips and forced her under the surface, and Ella also grasped her. William swam from a float 100 feet to them and got hold of Miss Phillips, who was nearest to him. He put his arm around Miss Phillips and enclosed with his arm either Myra or Ella, both of whom clung to Miss Phillips, and swam with the three girls 85 feet to wadable water. 19849-1671
