William John Crawford, 32, ironworker, died attempting to save Lee M. Nowland, 21, farmhand, from drowning, East Jordan, Michigan, June 27, 1924. While wading in the south arm of Pine Lake, Nowland stepped into deep water 130 feet from shore and could not swim. He called to Crawford and moved farther from shore. Crawford swam 50 feet to him. A struggle ensued, and both sank and were drowned. 24869-2047
