William K. Willock rescued Claudia S. Lloyd from burning, Indianapolis, Indiana, August 24, 1968. When the brakes on her coupe failed, resulting in an accident, Mrs. Lloyd, 22, was knocked unconscious and thrown to the floor. Fire broke out at the engine in the rear. Willock, 34, school security officer, arrived and, with a blanket over his head, ran to the driver’s side of the automobile but found the door was jammed. He climbed onto the hood and, kneeling, reached into the front compartment through the windshield opening, the glass having been dislodged. By then flames had appeared in the back seat section and under the hood. As Willock took hold of Mrs. Lloyd and pulled her up onto the seat, flames flared briefly on his trousers. While unfastening Mrs. Lloyd’s seat belt and shoulder harness, Willock sustained minor burns to his hands from flames which had spread to the front seat. He pulled Mrs. Lloyd onto the hood and then lowered her to the ground alongside the coupe; from where she was moved a safe distance away. Minutes afterward, the fuel tank erupted with resultant flames filling the front seat section and covering the hood. Mrs. Lloyd recovered from injuries and minor burns.
