William L. Robertson, 14, student, attempted to save Harold C. Crits, 19, factory hand, from drowning, Stratford, Ontario, June 18, 1923. While Crits was wading in the Avon River, he stepped into deep water and got into distress. William was much smaller than Crits and was afraid to attempt to aid him, but he swam 15 feet in deep water to Crits. Crits grabbed William at the shoulder and neck and pushed him under the surface, and a struggle followed. They bobbed up and down several times, William swallowing much water. William finally freed himself by striking Crits and, being weak, then swam 25 feet to the opposite bank. He was exhausted but recovered. Another boy swam to Crits and saved him. 26811-2089
