William M. Orr saved W. McDonald Morriss from drowning, Glade Spring, Virginia, March 16, 1912. Orr, 33, saw mill operator, who was very heavily dressed, jumped into the Middle Fork of the Holston River, which was at flood stage with a current of 6 m.p.h., and swam to McDonald, 10, who was unconscious and drifting downstream, 75 feet from the bank. Two men returned to the bank in fright after vainly trying to breast the current on horses. Orr grabbed McDonald and swam with him to a point 10 feet from the bank, where he attempted to touch bottom but was swept off his feet. He was becoming tired and called for help. Being swept against a nearly submerged bush, he grabbed a limb and pulled himself toward the bank. They were helped out, and McDonald was revived. 8273-738
