William Matthew Arndt saved Edward C. Gaylord from burning, Middlebury, Connecticut, April 27, 1989. Following a highway accident at night, Gaylord, 29, was inside his overturned and burning car. Arndt, 26, arrived on the scene and, despite growing flames, approached the driver’s side of the car. Seeing Gaylord in the rear seat area, Arndt went to the passenger side of the car and attempted to open its rear door, but the door was jammed. Arndt then kicked at the glass of that door, shattering it. Partially entering the car, in which heat was intense, he grasped Gaylord, who greatly outweighed him, and pulled him out. Flames increased, destroying the car. Gaylord required treatment for injuries sustained in the accident, and he recovered.
