William Norman Clements, 49, plasterer, attempted to save Margaret P. Booth, 39, from drowning, Miami Beach, Florida, December 15, 1923. Mrs. Booth was in waist-deep water in the Atlantic Ocean and was caught by a heavy undertow and swept into deep water. Clements, who had a crippled hand, swam through breakers five feet high and then 100 feet farther to Mrs. Booth. For four minutes he tried to swim toward shore with her but made no progress. A lifeguard with a life buoy then reached them and took them to shore. Clements was almost unconscious but recovered. Mrs. Booth could not be revived. 26464-2063
