William O. Bussiere, 63, carpenter, saved M. Rita Brennan, 9, from being killed by a motorcar, Moosup, Connecticut, July 25, 1928. Rita was walking on a railroad bridge toward which the car was approaching at a speed of 25 to 30 m.p.h. She became panic-stricken and crouched over a stringer at the edge of the bridge. Bussiere ran 90 feet on the bridge to her, scooped her up in one arm, and stepped to the edge of the bridge. The car was about eight feet from him then and was running at a greatly reduced speed. As Bussiere leaned forward to retain his balance, he was grazed by the car, and he and Rita fell 35 feet to a pool under the bridge, in which the water was four feet deep. Rita was but slightly bruised. Bussiere suffered only stiffness and soreness, which disabled him for 10 days. 28556-2380
