William R. Atkinson, 21, student, saved Chester M. Barry, 13, from drowning, Clarksville, Tennessee, July 2, 1915. (See case of LILLIAN E. SHAW.) Atkinson, who was tired from swimming, swam 30 feet to Chester. She got her arm around his neck, and both sank. After they reached the surface, Atkinson again tried to grasp her arm. Chester’s face went beneath the surface twice. When she became weaker, he seized her hair and swam 35 feet with her to the bank. He was almost exhausted before he reached it and became sick when he had been helped out of the water. 15205-1279
