William R. Creighton saved James DePew from being run over by a train, Elgin, Illinois, May 28, 1913. DePew, 87, retired cabinet maker, walked on a track on which a locomotive was backing at a speed of about 6 m.p.h. and was between the rails when the locomotive was about 10 feet from him. Creighton, 72, division lineman, ran about 10 feet, put one foot inside the rails of the track, grabbed DePew’s arms at the shoulders, and jerked DePew off the track. The corner of the tank of the locomotive passed about six inches from DePew’s chest as Creighton pulled him back off the track. 11009-1107
