William R. Fox, 40, truck driver, helped to save Max D. Greenwood, 34, fueling service operator, from burning and an impending explosion, Wichita, Kansas, February 2, 1960. At an airplane company fueling dock a tractor tanker exploded while Greenwood was atop the truck filling it with jet fuel. He was blown into the air and, badly injured, fell to the concrete roadway alongside the tanker, which was enveloped in high flames. His legs were in burning fuel which flowed from the truck. Fox ran 15 feet to Greenwood and, within three feet of flames then 12 feet high on the tanker, grasped him under the arms. Fox was joined by Keith Strait, who aided him in dragging Greenwood 20 feet from the burning truck. Another man arrived with an asbestos blanket, which was used to smother the flames on Greenwoods trousers. By then two other loaded tankers at the dock had caught fire. The burning fuel on the roadway spread rapidly toward the men, who twice moved Greenwood out of its path. Firemen extinguished the flames. Greenwood was hospitalized two months by multiple fractures and extensive burns which necessitated amputation of one leg. 45020-4367
