William R. Howe, 33, lock tender, died attempting to save J. George Myers, 8, from drowning, St. Johnsville, New York, July 28,1911. Howe went to the assistance of George, who could swim but a few strokes and who was holding to an overturned canoe in water eight feet deep in the Erie Canal 20 feet from the bank. As he took hold of George, the latter threw both arms around Howe’s neck. Howe swam 15 feet with George and then suddenly shoved him violently away, sank, and was drowned.
