William Riehle, 69, cabinet-maker, died attempting to save Fritz F. Muller, 21, laborer, from suffocation, Walhalla, South Carolina, May 20, 1911. Muller was overcome by gas, following a dynamite blast at the bottom of a 53-foot well, and Riehle was lowered to his assistance. Riehle was dazed by the gas before he could aid Muller and was overcome a short time later. Both were taken from the well by others. Riehle was dead, and Muller died later. 6705-630
