William Sterling Vance, 19, bookkeeper, died attempting to save Urbain J. Brochu, 30, broker, and his sons Jean, 8, and Julien, 6, from drowning, Montreal, Quebec, May 18, 1930. While Brochu and his sons were riding in a canoe on Riviere des Prairies, the canoe upset at a point 30 feet from a wharf, and all were thrown into water 10 feet deep. Vance dived from the wharf and swam toward them as they threshed near the upturned canoe. A minute or two later the Brochus and Vance had sunk and were drowned. Whether Vance had reached any of the Brochus was not observed. 30959-2653
