William T. Doll died attempting to save Greta V. Randerson from drowning, Coldwater, Michigan, December 22, 1917. Greta, 8, broke through the ice on the Coldwater River 12 feet from the bank, where the water was seven feet deep. William, 12, schoolboy, who was on the land, removed his coat, walked to the hole, and jumped into the water. He came up three feet from Greta, paddled feebly, sank again twice, and was drowned. Greta was rescued by a woman and a boy who formed a chain on the ice. 18599-1425
