William Thomas Ball sustained fatal injuries saving Carl E. Yoder from being killed by a train, Harper, Kansas, December 19, 1921. Carl, 6, stepped onto a track about three feet from the caboose of a freight train, which had just started to back up. Ball, 48, railroad conductor, who had been standing on the opposite side of the track, jumped to the middle of the track, caught Carl, and pushed him, knocking him to the ground between the rails. In doing so, Ball fell, and the wheels of the caboose passed over his legs. The train stopped after moving about 40 feet, and Carl crawled out from under the train. He was not seriously injured. Ball died of his injuries the following morning. 22059-1721
