William Vandervalk, 57, railroad inspector, saved an unidentified man, about 65, from being killed by a train, Winslow, Arizona, March 10, 1966. The man, who was intoxicated, staggered onto a railroad track on which a passenger train was approaching and fell between the rails. Vandervalk, who was 50 feet away, started toward the man when the train was 400 feet from him. Vandervalk hurried as fast as he could over the uneven terrain to where the man lay prone on the track. The train was approaching at 18 to 20 miles an hour when Vandervalk stepped between the rails, stopped, and grasped the man at the shoulders. He quickly lifted the man, whose feet struck the rail as Vandervalk pulled him from the track with force just before the train passed them.
