William W. Fairchild attempted to rescue Robert C. Raymond, aged seven, and four others from a runaway, Rutland, Vermont, May 25, 1940. Two horses, which were hitched to a wagon in which were Robert and four other children, became frightened and ran away. A disk harrow was attached at the rear of the wagon. The horses ran at an increasing speed on the street; and Fairchild, 60, superintendent of schools, who had run 70 feet, took hold of the bridle or rein at the side of the head of one of the horses, took a step or two, and then fell, the wagon or the harrow striking him. The horses ran at least 400 feet farther and then were stopped by a man who had vaulted into the wagon. Fairchild sustained a fracture of his elbow and three ribs and other injuries and was fully disabled for five weeks. No one else was injured. 38684-3211
