William W. Tillistrand, 35, crossing watchman, sustained fatal injuries attempting to save Julia P. Kennard, 71, from being killed by a train, Quincy, Massachusetts, September 26, 1924. Mrs. Kennard started over a railroad crossing when a train was approaching at a speed of 40 m.p.h. Tillistrand, who was attending the gates at the crossing, left his station at the lever and ran 30 feet to Mrs. Kennard, who was then on the track on which the train was, and took hold of her, getting on the track himself. Mrs. Kennard jerked away from Tillistrand, and they were struck by the locomotive. Both were fatally injured, Tillistrand dying an hour later. 24666-1950
