Willie Grace rescued William A. Brown from a homicidal attack, Chicago, Illinois, June 23, 1967. When Brown, 36, police patrolman, attempted to arrest him, a 19-year-old youth weighing nearly 200 pounds seized the patrolman’s night stick and knocked him to the sidewalk. Dropping to a position astride Brown, who was on his back, the assailant drew the patrolman’s loaded revolver from its holster. Brown took hold of the gun with his free hand, the other arm being pinned by the assailant. As they struggled a crowd gathered; but no one made any move to aid Brown. Grace, 44, maintenance man, approached the scene and noted the situation. He ran to alongside the assailant and Brown as they struggled for possession of the revolver. Grace shouted to the assailant to release Brown, but the struggle continued. Grace then seized the assailant with both hands and jerked backward on him, enabling Brown to free his pinned arm. The assailant still retained his hold on the revolver, and Brown immediately grasped the gun with both, hands. The revolver went off. The bullet passed through the assailant’s hand and also through Grace’s leg. Brown completed his arrest of the youth. Grace was removed to a hospital for treatment. He later recovered fully. 49794-5430
