Willie L. Richardson died attempting to save Randy Stroud from drowning, La Place, Louisiana, April 9, 1972. When he fell into deep water in a power plant discharge well, Randy, 11, a non-swimmer, floundered at the surface as he was carried along by the strong current. Richardson, 41, truckdriver, ran about 450 feet to opposite Randy, removed his boots, and dived into the water. Richardson reached a point alongside Randy, who was attempting to swim. As both were carried along by the current, they were submerged briefly. They drifted farther together and then sank and drowned.
