Winchester Britton, Jr., 16, student, saved Ralph A. Hanmer, 15, and Roswell F. Cushing, 16, students, from drowning, Weekapaug, Rhode Island, July 15, 1920. (See case of DONALD W. ROBINSON.) Ralph and Roswell became helpless while attempting to swim toward shore in the rough water, and Ralph called for help at a point 160 feet from shore. Winchester swam 15 or 20 feet to Ralph and took hold of his arm, and both boys swam about 25 feet toward shore, where they got footing in wadable water. Roswell had been carried to a point 210 feet from shore. Hearing Roswell’s cry for help, Winchester then swam to him. With Roswell holding to him from behind, Winchester swam with great effort 70 feet toward shore and supported Roswell as they waded to shore. 20658-1799
