Windell W. Winterbottom died attempting to save Edward L. Belfatto from drowning, Grants Pass, Oregon, May 17, 1979. Belfatto, 23, attempted to swim across the Rogue River but called for help after swimming 100 feet. Winterbottom, 38, laborer, entered the water and swam to Belfatto, who struggled with him. The two men were submerged intermittently as the current moved them downstream. They were carried into a deep hole, where both went under and drowned.
