Woodrouffe L. Bartley saved Mary A. Mountain from drowning, Greenville, Maine, September 28, 1931. Mrs. Mountain, 58, lost control of a sedan automobile that she was driving along a wharf on the shore of Moosehead Lake, and the automobile went over the edge front first into the water. The top of the automobile was three feet below the surface, and the water was three feet below the floor of the wharf. After men who jumped into the water close to the automobile had made perfunctory efforts to find Mrs. Mountain, Bartley, 20, trucker, almost fully clothed, dived repeatedly to locate her. At least once he got entirely inside the automobile. Diving for the seventh time, Bartley, who was chilled and out of breath, pulled Mrs. Mountain from the automobile, held her between his legs, and swam to the surface. He began to sink. A rope was thrown to him, and he was pulled to the wharf. Mrs. Mountain was unconscious but was revived. 31688-2649
