Y. Francis Beaty, 67, farmer, attempted to save John P. Campbell, 29, farmer, from suffocation, Bostic, North Carolina, June 26, 1926. While Campbell was working at the bottom of a well 53 feet deep, he was overcome by gas. Numerous men refused to enter the well to aid him. In the face of protests of his wife and others, Beaty, who knew the conditions, had the men lower him tied to a windlass rope. On the way down he began to feel a choking sensation, but, breathing carefully, he managed to tie the rope around Campbell. He lost consciousness as both were being drawn out of the well. He was revived. Campbell could not be revived. 26392-2236
